Cognitive Impairments (Dementia and Alzheimer’s)

At Temple Court Senior Care, we understand the challenges families face when caring for a senior with Cognitive Impairments, such as Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia. Every senior is unique and we know that these memory related impairments can have many symptoms that affect your loved one differently. We take a customized approach to providing your loved one with the highest quality care and support – we consider who your loved one was before the disease took effect, not just who we can see today because of it.

Unfortunately, these impairments not only affect your loved one, but can bring anguish and unhappiness to all who are near and dear. When you can no longer provide the necessary level of care or a safe environment for your loved one, it is important to remember that you are doing the best that you can. While you are grappling with the exasperation and the feelings of guilt, your loved one needs the proper care, attention, and plenty of support from loving relatives.

You are not alone – we are here to help.

Finding the right place is just as important to the person in need of the placement as it is to the rest of the family and friends. It is essential to consider the safety of the environment, the quality of care, activities, and the ability of the staff to understand and communicate properly with your loved one. Our staff has a strong understanding of memory impaired residents. We pay attention to their eating habits and make sure they get what they like and need. We also believe that people need as much fresh air and mental stimulation as possible. Our residents enjoy trips to our local family park where they see familiar faces of friendly neighbors, say hello, and watch the children play. And of course, family and friends are always encouraged to visit.

According to the CDC, a few common signs of cognitive impairments include the following:

  • Memory loss
  • Frequently asking the same question over and over
  • Not recognizing familiar people and places
  • Having trouble exercising judgment, such as knowing what to do in an emergency
  • Changes in mood or behavior
  • Vision problems
  • Difficulty planning and carrying out tasks, such as following a recipe or keeping track of monthly bills

Stroke Recovery

If your loved one has suffered a stroke, you may have many questions and need to find a safe and respected care facility for assistance. Stroke can be devastating, and recovery time after a stroke is different for everyone – it can take weeks, months, or even years. Some people recover fully, but others have long-term or lifelong disabilities.

Experienced and Customized Stroke Care

Our home care facilities are experienced with stroke survivors and we approach each situation with a customized level of care for each individual. The upheaval and frustration that comes along with the inability to perform basic functions of daily living can lead to fear, apprehension, and uncertainty that stroke survivors and their families face in its aftermath.

Different parts of the brain can be affected depending on the type of stroke. The recovery from stroke can be a lifelong process. I believe it is important to understand the resulting effects of stroke and how to cope with the required physical and emotional care and support.

Our caregivers are trained to understand the common effects of stroke and to help with the physical needs and emotional support that is so crucial to the well-being of your loved one. We encourage and work with the family and therapists of your choice to promote the improvement of your loved one’s health and positive outlook on life.

Diabetes Care

Living with diabetes can be tough at times, but with the proper guidance from your doctor and a good plan, your loved one’s diabetes can be effectively managed. As we get older, diabetes can become a bit more challenging and we can have an increased risk for specific complications. According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 12 million seniors (age 65 and older) who are living with diabetes in the United States.

A Complete Approach to Diabetes Care

Different types of diabetes require a different approach in the care of each individual resident. Our staff has the experience in dealing with the unique challenges and emotions faced by elderly diabetics. We prepare an appropriate diet and assist your loved one with monitoring his/her blood sugar level. We help to manage diabetes with doctor prescribed medications, an essential diet, and exercise.

In the most common Type 2 diabetes, it is sufficient to control the disease with proper food, exercise, and medication prescribed by the doctor. In cases where injections are needed we will accept a resident who is capable to administer his/her own injections or injections are done by their licensed nurse. In either case our emphasis is on a good diet, plenty of fresh air, and as much exercise as it is appropriate on a case by case basis.
